Miles & Stockbridge hired OPX to perform its Integrated Operating Environment (IOE) analysis and design the firm’s new headquarters in downtown Baltimore. After 82 years in the same location, Miles & Stockbridge had outlived its traditional space.
The design process began with IOE to fully understand the vision of the firm and create a space that aligned the firm’s culture, tools and operating environment. The IOE engagement, which included a vision session, online survey and focus group interviews, identified the goals of the new space—to increase innovation and client focus—and the barriers in the way of achieving those goals due to operations, resources and space restrictions. Based on the IOE results and on-site observations, OPX brought several design concepts to the table, including interior vs. exterior offices, more areas for collaboration and interaction, flexible space and updated technology.
Miles & Stockbridge opted for a progressive design with smaller, unified glass offices approximately 160 SF in size. The glass offices allow for more natural light within the space and encourage interaction between employees. The design also includes a central staircase to increase connectivity between floors, working coffee lounges, and a large flexible space for functions and events.
The new office has helped transform Miles into a progressive and modern business.
The space has:
Increased revenues by more than 12%
Increased productivity by 9% (measured by billable hours)
Improved interaction– the ‘hives’ are fully occupied connecting Miles staff daily
Improved retention and attraction – lawyers from other Miles offices moving to Baltimore
Increased brand awareness and visibility: numerous Baltimore civic groups request to use Miles & Stockbridge’s space for events; the ABA Journal published an article about the progressive design
